Why were there so many greatest generations involved in shriners, kiwanis, moose lodge, etc.? You go into one of those clubs now and the membership it's literally dying off. Even the boomers didn't join.

Greatest generation is a myth. I would take the generation that tossed off the yoke of the Brits or the Civil war generation as the 'greatest'. Nonetheless, no to disrepect those that fought in WWII{Russia won that war}, they were the FUCKING WORST IN RAISING their kids. So today we see their grandkids or Great Grand kid acting like spoiled little babies.
Lack of social cohesion. There was a guy who wrote about this years ago. The fall of these type of community groups reflected the disconnect of people with their local communities.

This stuff is horseshit. I imagine in every generation a minority of the people will be exceptional - exceptionally good or exceptionally bad. The vast majority won't really be much of anything.
The images we have are either hazy childhood idealized memories or media images, which were much more scripted and artificial in those days. There were people who worked and sweated their asses off, and there were others who loafed around and did nothing. Those were the days when most communication was by letter if too far for a quick phonecall. Maybe a rare telegraph in an emergency. The pace of life was slower. There were heroes in the military but if you think its all square-jawed marble state shit, read "Catch 22" for a take on some other aspects of the WWII experience. Or Vonnegut, another decorated WWII combat vet.
