Knowing what you do now, what would you do differently about chosing a college?

I would have accepted Princeton's offer and gone there instead of UVa, even though I would have had to take out a ton of loans to make that work.

So you made the right decision.

Looking back, I'd have gone to several junior colleges, and loaded up on every single skilled trade they offered. Gunsmithing, machine shops, electronics, building trades, etc. for 4+ years. I'd also have picked a school or schools with an excellent music program since some of them are quite a lot better than universities in terms of instrumental jazz. Math through calculus and the more mechanistic business skills (accounting for example) would have been woven in to an invented curricula.

After that, strongly working towards self employment and/or company ownership would have been the order of the day. All of this talk of resumes inherently involves being a wage slave.

The results wouldn't have been as valuable financially as what I did in terms of engineering, but I'd have been better off.

Hey, you asked.

I paid a lot to go to a private college I didn't like and which did me no special favors in terms of the real world.

I went the Naval Academy route, and I really wouldn't recommend it unless you're pretty sure you want a military career. Grads are too spread out for it to be a big help in the business world, and you're starting at least 5 years behind in any technical field.

Something like MIT would have been a better route.
