Some fundie group who watches tv programming solely to find shit to be upset about. Or some congresswoman looking for somerhing to AW about to get her name out there.

OP has a good point as it wasn't always like this. JFK as prez could f'n'c as many interns as he wanted and no one gave a fuck. Slick Willy bones one fat hag and you would think he had started WW3. Even worse now as it looks like the choice will be Mittens or Obongo, two nonentities with no morals or principles other than to get elected
Possibly, but it's all over the news, not just NBC.
It is being descibed as 'offensive'. What the hell is the matter with these people?
It's not just the US, to be honest. When someone on UK TV says anything even vaguely controversial, the newspapers immediately start their 'complaints' count.
Couple of years ago Russel Brand left some dumb messages on another actors answerphone. It took weeks for it to appear in the press, but as soon as it did, thousands of complaints started rolling in. Nobody cared when he actually did it, only when the papers pointed it out.
Jeremy Clarkson is asked to apologise for almost everything he says nowadays.
You have to understand there are many Americas within America.
On the one hand, you have your volvo-driving liberals, with their nice homes, good college degrees, decent yuppie jobs. From the New York Times on the doorstep each morning to the Braun eco-thermos in tastefully understated matte steel, every detail conforms to the totally unspoken lib taste matrix. Liberals of this ilk are basically kept in line by fear, and specifically a kind of status anxiety. If they cannot manifest the correct hip vibes of tolerance and gender-neutral harmony, it's worse than immoral - its bad taste. And having bad taste is the worse thing that could happen to anyone, they truly believe.
Many are quite intelligent and talented, but they are manipulated nonetheless. Sexual freedom and a total, wide-eyed willingness to be sexually "liberated" is at the core of their understanding of things. They will order and set up authentic Yoruba candle-huts made of ox-dung in the hallway upstairs so that when their daughter's amazing, wise, and righteous Nigerian boyfriend sleeps over, he can use the traditional mating beacons of his people to find his way to their daughter's bedroom, for a wonderful night of uninhibited, liberated, multiculral throat-fucking.
Then on the other hand you have cletus, who straps his daughter with a hickory rod across her febrile young ass while she shrieks in pain and recites Genesis 19:30-36 over and over for daring to raise her eyes from the dust on a sabbath and gaze with impure eyes on a member of the opposite sex.
Its a bit of a crazymaking contrast and the media has to try to accomodate the various prejudices of both Cletus and Libbie.
Yes, all over the news, on every channel, they're talking about the half-time show. That's why NBC had them do the finger, they wouldn't be talking so much just about an aging disco singer.
As to the rest, people like to feel they're better than someone else. Newt cheats on his wife, but it's not so bad if he complains about Clinton's blowjob. Fat wife is stuck at home with a sexless husband and useless kids, but it's not so bad because she's morally superior to hollywood stars who give people the finger.
They used to burn witches for similar reasons. At least it's not that bad.
There are actually very few proven cases of witch burning.
In mediaeval times, 90% of witch trials resulted in the accused being acquitted.
Most witches were executed by hanging, then sometimes their bodies burnt. In the few cases where they were actually 'burned' alive, it would be usual for the executioner to stab them to death before the fire could do much harm.
I was having fun and being cartoonish with it. Take your autism meds, Rainmain. Almost time for Wapner.
The OP was asking about the contrast of sexuality in America, why people are depraved and others are uptight, and the conflicting messages from the media. That's a confusing thing for a lot of foreiners, so I tried to illustrate two overdrawn examples of Americans with different value systems.
I'm OK with what you say, but it wasn't exactly what I was saying.
I'm not sure the 'uptight' people really are. I don't think any of them are really offended by someone flipping the bird, they just like to complain - they maybe decide other people will be offended, so they complain on their behalf.
Leaves the question, who is really offended, 'cos I suspect it's nobody.
