I had a similar experience when I checked out "Mein Kampf" from a black librarian in Parkdale (largely black hood). She looked like she might kill me. I weakly defended myself (tho no defence is needed -- it's a fucking book and i'm in a library )
It's not the same for two reasons:
1. The medium is the message. It takes some skill and a lot of patience to receive readings from the book of Matthew from some guy in a trailer broadcasting off a honda generator in a valley 5000 kilometres away.
It is impossible by the laws of physics to determine who has received information broadcast by radio waves. Everyone who accessed a website can be located.

I think it is largely correct and consistent with the archaeological record, but again there is no way to prove it. The cool thing is that people like yourself who (quite justifiably) consider it bullshit also recommend it.

Read The Origin of Consciousness in the Breakdown of the Bicameral Mind by Julian Jaynes if you haven't -- it really rests on the vast difference between the Iliad and the Odyssey -- in the first they have no consciousness in the second they are modern humans.
Richard Dawkins nailed it: it is either the best book ever written or complete bullshit -- there is no way to be sure which.
